Physiotherapist led Chair Pilates Class for beginners and improvers in Poole
All my physiotherapist led chair pilates classes (chairlates) are foundation level and suitable for beginners and improvers. Many of my clients have been with me for years.
Beginning of The Class
I start the class with everyone standing, focusing on warm-up exercises and gentle movements to prepare the body for the central part of the class. This includes deep breathing to enhance focus and alignment and movements to warm up the muscles and increase blood flow, such as gentle stretches to loosen the neck, shoulders, hips and spine. We practice engaging our centre (the inside core), the deep muscles that support the spine with good posture and breath.
Main part of The Class
The core of the class combines Pilates exercises done while standing using chairs for support, with a strong emphasis on balance and seated exercises modified from pilates matwork. I encorporate our current focus such as back strengthening and mobility. I guide everyone through a series of pilates exercises that strengthen the core from the inside to the outside, improve balance, and increase mobility. This might include standing leg lifts, spine twists and movements using resistance bands, the soft pilates ball or light hand weights. Throughout the class, I offer personalized guidance, correction and modifications to suit all levels of ability, ensuring you participate safely and effectively. This is why you complete a health questionaire before you attend so I know if I need to modify for a health conditions, injuries or surgeries.
End of The Class
The session ends with a cool-down period that includes relaxation and stretching exercises, gradually transitioning from standing to sitting. This part includes slow, deep breathing, spiky ball massage and stretches that help release tension and promote a sense of calm. You then close the class with a positive message, encouraging everyone to reflect on the benefits of the exercises they’ve done.
Homework
At the end of the class, I give everyone a simple exercise to do at home. This could be a standing or seated exercise to reinforce what was practised in class. Such as the single leg balance next to your kitchen counter or squats just like you are sitting down and standing up from a chair. I provide clear instructions and encourage you to integrate the exercise into your daily routine until the next session.
