At Lucy Purrier Physio Pilates, I combine my expertise as a Chartered Physiotherapist and a Certified APPI Pilates teacher, trained in the MK Pilates method, to offer personalized exercises focused on strengthening your back and improving mobility. My physiotherapist-led Pilates sessions integrate the Pilates principles—breath, centre, concentration, flow, control, and precision—ensuring that each movement is safe, effective and promotes spinal health.
Whether you’re managing chronic back pain, recovering from an injury, or simply aiming to improve your core strength and flexibility, my classes provide a balanced approach to back pain relief and spinal support. Remember in my classes, it’s important to be able to smile! This tells me you’re breathing properly and working with the right amount of effort.
Why Pilates for Back Strength and Pain Relief?
Pilates is an effective method for addressing back pain, focusing on core strength, postural alignment, and controlled movement. As a physiotherapist and certified Pilates teacher, I adapt the exercises to each individual’s needs, helping to strengthen the core muscles that support the spine and improve overall mobility.
By focusing on core engagement and spinal alignment, Pilates helps alleviate pain and prevent future injuries. With my unique qualifications in both APPI Pilates and MK Pilates, I customize each session to ensure that you experience the full benefits, whether you’re recovering from injury or working to improve long-term spinal health.
Pilates Principles for a Healthy Back
The Pilates principles guide each exercise, helping you develop a stronger, more flexible and healthier back. Here’s how they contribute to back strength and mobility:
1. Breath: Proper breathing engages the core and reduces tension, allowing the muscles around your spine to support and stabilize.
2. Centre: Core strength is essential for spinal support and is the foundation of all Pilates movements.
3. Concentration: Focusing on each movement ensures that the right muscles are engaged, protecting the back from unnecessary strain.
4. Flow: Smooth, controlled movements help increase flexibility and relieve tension in the spine.
5. Control: Exercising with control stabilizes the spine and strengthens the core, reducing the risk of injury.
6. Precision: Performing exercises with accuracy ensures maximum benefit, targeting the muscles that provide back support and improve posture.
Personalized and Safe Pilates Exercises
I assess everyone before they attend my classes, allowing me to tailor exercises specifically to their needs and ensure that all movements are safe. If you try these gentle Pilates exercises at home, it’s important to keep your body feeling good. If you’re unsure about any of the movements, please ask me or come to a trial class.
Key Pilates Exercises for Back Strength and Flexibility
In my classes, I focus on specific Pilates exercises that improve back flexibility and strengthen the core, all while integrating the Pilates principles to ensure safe movement. These exercises are tailored to individuals with back pain or those recovering from injury.
1. Pelvic Tilts: This gentle movement mobilizes the lower back while engaging the core. By focusing on breath and control, pelvic tilts help release tension and improve spinal mobility.
2. Single Leg Stretch: This exercise follows pelvic tilts and strengthens the lower abdominals. Lying on your back, slide one leg away along the mat and then slide back in keeping your pelvis level and still. The key is control and precision, which help stabilize the lower back while strengthening the core.
3. Clam Exercise (Lying on Side): Strengthening the glutes is crucial for stabilizing the pelvis and supporting the lower back. Lying on your side with knees bent with a lengthened spine, lift your top knee while keeping your feet together and your pelvis still. Can you try to keep a little space under your waist? Focus on control and precision to engage the glutes and reduce strain on the lower back.
4. Modified Swimming Exercise on All Fours: Starting on all fours with a level pelvis and a lengthened spine, slide one leg away at a time on the mat, alternating sides. Imagine you have a tray of drinks balanced across your pelvis! This exercise improves back stability and strengthens the muscles along the spine, helping to prevent back pain. Can you notice your deep core muscles working (your centre) in the lower tummy area?
5. Shell Stretch: A favourite among my clients, the shell stretch is a great way to release tension in the lower back and stretch the spine. Begin in all fours, sit back on your heels but not all the way and tuck the tailbone down, stretch your arms forward, allow your head to come in between your arms and look at your knees. Focus on breathing into your side ribs to relax the spine and lengthen the back muscles.
Remember, in each of these exercises, you should be able to smile—it’s my way of ensuring you’re breathing properly and working at the right intensity!
